The Roadmap
At the start of 2015, regional economist Dr. Stephen Fuller warned regional leaders that Greater Washington was at risk of falling behind other major metropolitan regional economies if there was not an increase in regional cooperation and a decrease in the region’s reliance on federal funding. Heeding his call for action, the 2030 Group and a strong cross-sector coalition of regional leaders came together to support The Roadmap for the Washington Region’s Future Economy over the course of 2016 and 2017.
The Roadmap research team identified seven advanced industrial clusters that could spur economic growth and development for the region over the next decade based on the region’s competitive advantages, and interviewed over 30 of the region’s top business leaders to better understand what it’ll take to maximize the potential growth of these industries in Greater Washington over the next decade.
As a result of the Roadmap, there is consensus behind the fact that we must address our transportation and housing affordability issues, rebrand the region, and increase the collaboration between the academic sector and business community in a way that ignites the entrepreneurial culture across the region.
Advancing as a region requires that we advance all of these action items, as they are all part of a larger interconnected plan and vision for this region. Regional success depends on finding and enacting regional solutions on all of these fronts.
At the third annual Roadmap update event, attendees will hear about the progress that has been made to advance the Roadmap, as well as how Amazon’s HQ2 has and could impact our region, how the unprecedented regional collaboration behind the MetroNow coalition helped develop a framework for not only regional collaboration, but regional action. Metro’s General Manager Paul Wiedefeld will discuss how the business community helped to put Metro on a safe and reliable path forward. Steve Fuller, Bob Buchanan, and regional partners will also discuss what the future of regionalism might look like and who are the future regional leaders that will lead the effort.
We hope you will be able to join us!
